Award-winning flutist Schuyler Thornton is an orchestral, pit, and chamber musician. She has performed with many orchestras including the Rockbridge Symphony, Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra, and Sewanee Festival Orchestra. A versatile musician, she also enjoys performing in pit orchestras and has performed with College Light Opera Company since 2015. She is passionate about chamber music, and recently coordinated and performed in the inaugural chamber music series with the College Light Opera Company. Ms. Thornton is an advocate of new music, performing at the 2016 and 2017 Contemporary Music Festivals at James Madison University. Schuyler has served as the Orchestra Manager for the College Light Opera Company since 2017, and has taken on arts administration roles at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival and at Lawrence University. She has been honored at the Wisconsin Flute Festival and a featured performer at the VMEA Conference and CBDNA Convention. Ms. Thornton is an active teacher, having experience working with students of all ages, and is currently teaching in New Jersey. Her interest in pedagogy has led to the publication of several articles in Flute Talk. An East Coast native, Schuyler had the privilege to work with many teachers after falling in love with the flute at an early age, and has studied with Beth Chandler, Patricia George, Erin Lesser, Suzanne Jordheim, and Gary Schocker. She received her Bachelor of Music in Performance and Bachelor of Arts in Government from Lawrence University, and earned her Master of Music in Performance from James Madison University. Schuyler is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance under the tutelage of Bart Feller at Rutgers University.
