The history of the Union Depot - St. Paul, MN goes back to 1879 when nine railroads came together to form the Saint Paul Union Depot Company. James J. Hill, known as the “Empire Builder” led the efforts to create a single terminal for these many trains. The first building opened in 1881 and was rebuilt again in 1884 when a fire caused damage. After another fire in 1913, efforts began to rebuild a bigger terminal which was completed in 1926. From 1971, the building was used for various business purposes until being renovated and reopened in its current state in 2012.
